The Mail's heading is :"The love triangle at Number 10 that could have cost us the war" .. Yes Asquith's philandering nearly did .. but no mention of sex other than the fact that Asquith was keen on it after Margot banned him from her bedroom (after many failed pregnancies).. Anne misses the point that Asquith was more than a groper and would take a lady's hand to his erect instrument if she dared sit beside him!! ..Poor Venetia she did stand a chance of repelling this awful man ... in my view he was another Jimmy savile.
Anne also wonders about his daughter Violet Asquith and her lesbian tendencies .. I also wonder why she was SO keen to defend her father .. ..Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11885464637224117500noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8927225050168937046.post-55781135586713855642014-11-01T13:27:00.003-07:002014-11-01T13:27:49.520-07:00A broken man A good day's conference on Liberal History concerning WW1 held at Kings College London. I find it amazingly that the male political historians don't seem to understand that a politician's emotions are as important as their rhetoric. Surely it is important to know that Asquith was threatening suicide throughout many months of the war? If you are thinking of ending your life ..can you make good decisions?
Is it not important in our understanding of his handling of the war to know that his thoughts were often turning to illicit sex?
The historians consider that the fact Asquith looked "tired" during the early years of the war is significant but the fact that he was "a broken man", when Venetia sent her fateful letter telling him she was leaving to marry Montagu is irrelevant, in relation to Asquith's decision to form the coalition in May 1915! Strange people...

By the way there was a female professor of social history at the conference who agreed with me about the importance of emotions in relation to historical events ... surely its time female historians took a more active interest in political history .. or will we always get a one sided view of crucial events? Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11885464637224117500noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8927225050168937046.post-23222899574540547032014-10-27T16:02:00.000-07:002014-10-27T16:02:06.582-07:00Asking demanding questions at the Liberal History Group's meetingLiberal History Group ..will they discuss Asquith's love life in war time?
Asquith informs Venetia about developments with Home Rule and then his worries about the build up of tensions in Europe…..
After this he writes ..
"What a screed about politics! Poor darling - but you are very patient, and, what is even more to the point, really interested - aren't you? "
In my view this shows that he knows Venetia is not really that interested in politics (even though he sends her state secrets in the normal post) ….He is trying to delude himself that she is .. I still find his delusions quite amazing.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11885464637224117500noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8927225050168937046.post-52001762997966293752014-03-05T23:50:00.003-08:002014-03-05T23:50:46.754-08:00Started to reread letters about start of WW1I have started to re read Asquith's letters to Venetia in the build up to the war… one thing I hadn't noticed before was that he appeared to include in his letters the actual telegrams that he had received and send them to Venetia .. quite extraordinary!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11885464637224117500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8927225050168937046.post-13034917282629847332014-03-03T00:24:00.001-08:002014-03-03T00:24:16.867-08:00Tim Piggott Smith is going to play Asquith on Thursday BBC 2 at 9.00! And for three nights too…..

Tim was interviewed on the Andrew Marr show and the presenter insightfully asked Tim whether there was anything about his letter writing to Venetia in the play .. he said there wasn't but they both agreed that Asquith was a serial gropper.. how much dropping does he do in the play?
I can't wait to see the play as it is billed as a proper historical documentary but why has Mark Hayward (the author) missed out the vital fact that Asquith was writing letters to his young lover in cabinet meetings?
That union of prime minister HH Asquith and Venetia Stanley produced my stepfather Louis Stanley!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11885464637224117500noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8927225050168937046.post-56267418051008958052013-09-03T14:10:00.000-07:002013-09-03T14:10:17.139-07:00Its been a busy week and I am still slowly revealing more details from my book. Why don't the Liberals come out of the woodwork and tell us what really happened to their leader in WW1? Was he threatening suicide? Did he take his eye off the ball? Was he more interested in Venetia than what was being discussed in the war cabinet? The story about Asquith's mental health gets worse and worse did Venetia's sister also try and pacify the irrational war time leader?
Lots of interest in Conspiracy of Secrets over this weekend! A Scottish newspaper was interested in the story because Asquith was MP for East Fife and rector of Glasgow University and a Welsh newsprint loves the story because Asquith often visited the Stanley family in their glorious summer house Penrhos ( 30 bedrooms) on Anglesey. There is strong evidence that Louis was born here. I loved it.

I know I shouldn't be surprised... but I am .. that so many people remember the era of BRM and Graham Hill. I suppose I was only a little girl then and really I had no idea how many followers BRM had... I knew that the first BRM win in Zandvorte ( Holland) hit the national headlines but I never thought much about it at the time. ) I must have been about 11.

Thanks also to those who have already read Conspiracy of Secrets and came up to see me.... there were some great compliments .. perhaps the one I liked best was" I could not put it down.. and when I had finished it made me think so much.. I have never thought about a book so much before"! Thanks Alan.

I won't be there over the weekend but Chaters will look after you (not far from the Michelin stand on the way to the food tents). Its not really so amazing that so many people want to go to Goodwood as Lord March etc do it so well.. thanks for the courtesy car that did help as I had so much to carry.
Stepfather Louis Stanley was the domineering character who was the boss of BRM (British Racing Motors) with my wonderful mum Jean Stanley (she was the daughter of A. Owen who started Rubery Owen. the large motor engineering company of Darlaston).
Here's a bit about my memory of Aintree race course (the British GP was often held there in those days) in the days of Harry Schell.
his fight to improve motor racing safety.

there he was, the uneven surface jostling him from side to side as the car

July 12 th. I'm very excited .. just like I was as a child. We always used to go to the Easter Monday meeting. With Easter eggs all over the back shelf and told to hide them as we entered the Paddock. I dont know how my mum did all that driving and in those days terrible traffic jams. For those of you who think my book is just about discovering Asquith its not .. its also about fond memories of following BRM that great racing car of the 1950s and 60s. Motor racing was so trilling in those days and I will never forget the noise of that supercharged engine.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11885464637224117500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8927225050168937046.post-81053913910104084602013-06-21T07:47:00.001-07:002013-06-21T07:47:25.118-07:00Wow! Did Disraeli have a love child or two .. just like HH Asquith? Were all the Prime Ministers at it in the past? Was it as a badge of honour for high placed statesmen or was it a typical male politician's behaviour?
That the expression Squiffy developed because Asquith was so well known for his drinking habits. I felt very welcome in Morley with the Family History Group.
The audience was knowledgeable and asked some really good questions. Of course I dont know why some people act like they do .. but I guess we want to try and understand why some human beings behave!
I can guess why the politicians acted the way they did, but as for Stepfather I am not so sure, I know why.
Travelled by train and when I got to Morley station ( having looked it up on Google) .. I was going to walk to the venue .. but a really really nice lady saw my suitcase and asked where I was going .. she then insisted on taking me to the hall in her car..

Who Do You Think You Are?

It was a relief to discover that a professional genealogist rates the genealogical research I did in the writing of my book, Conspiracy of Secrets.

In the book I trace the origins of my stepfather whose past was very carefully concealed and I discovered that he was the illegitimate son of Prime Minister Asquith and the much younger, Venetia Stanley, his daughter's best friend.

When you attend something as extraordinary as the Who Do YOu Think You Are? LIVE show and find Olympia heaving with professionals and experts... and the investigative methods you used in your research are what they do for a living, it is quite daunting! Anyway, I booked a stall at the WDYTYA? Live show and last weekend laden with stock, I went to sell my book and spread the word. I had a wonderful three days there and you can read about it on my book's Facebook Page - do visit me there!

So I was delighted to be contacted by professional genealogist, Roy Stockdill who tells me that my genealogy was spot on. You can read Roy's wonderful blog posts here:- Roy Stockdill blog post. Thank you, Roy!
